It allows you to have one on one time with guests. Choosing a destination wedding gives you extended time to make memories with your guests. Most often, destination weddings are more intimate than traditional weddings and if you have family and friends scattered across the country, it’s an ideal choice to have a wedding away since most would be required to travel anyway.
It is cost effective. There are many resorts that cater to wedding groups, giving you some awesome group benefits. You may be able to get your stay free, ceremony free, or other great bonuses. On average, you should book 8-14 months in advance to be able to secure the wedding date and travel rates. However, this advice can depend on the size of your group. - Decide for sure you want to do this. As in most decisions we make, there will be people who don’t love the idea and may want to talk you out of it. Make sure you are solid in your decision before you announce it, so that others won’t sway you. In fact, waiting to announce it until it is officially planned gives you the advantage over the negative nellies.
- Choose a destination. Consulting an experienced destination wedding travel planner will help make this step easier. Take into consideration the budget of your guests in terms of air tickets and travel ease.
- Choose a resort. Usually harder than it sounds. In a day where online reviews can be purchased and pictures can be edited, it’s difficult to really know what a resort is like if you have not been there. Again, relying on an expert is key. The best ones know the destinations and resorts well and will be able to give you personalized guidance. Click here to get personalized resort recommendations
- Secure the ceremony date and time with the resort or venue.
- Secure a room block for your group if inviting guests. There is nothing more awkward than inviting guests to a destination wedding resort and having it sell out before everyone books their travel. Room blocks are especially vital if you are traveling during high season, to a popular resort, or if you have a big group, This part will require a deposit and a contract. However, do not worry – our destination wedding planners have daily experience in handling these details and can walk you through it. They also should have resort contacts that allow them to save you money on the deposit.
- Decide how guests will book. If you are using an expert, they probably already have this set up for you. If not, make sure to have a plan that pays attention to the important dates on your contract. Missing a date can be costly.
- Get the word out. Again, your destination wedding planner will probably make this step very easy for you. Otherwise, you will need some way to let your friends and family know the plan. They need travel information as soon as possible – ideally 9-12 months in advance.
- Decide on your events, decor, vendors and details.
- Travel! Congratulations!
